California is on the verge of expanding health insurance coverage to uninsured working parents through the Healthy Families Program (California's State Children's Health Insurance Program[SCHIP]). In January 2001, the state submitted a waiver application to the federal government to expand the program to include parents with incomes of less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) who are not currently eligible for Medi-Cal. More than 400,000 parents would be newly eligible for public insurance under this proposed expansion.
