Expanding Healthy Families to Parents: The Role of Employer Coverage

Authors: Ed Neuschler, Rick Curtis, Marian Mulkey, Chris Perrone

April 2001

California is on the verge of expanding health insurance coverage to uninsured working parents through the Healthy Families Program (California's State Children's Health Insurance Program[SCHIP]). In January 2001, the state submitted a waiver application to the federal government to expand the program to include parents with incomes of less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) who are not currently eligible for Medi-Cal. More than 400,000 parents would be newly eligible for public insurance under this proposed expansion.

Published in Medi-Cal Policy Institute a project of the California HealthCare Foundation.
